THE PROPER KIND: An introduction to the music of Graham Coxon

Graham Coxon is a prolific English singer/songwriter, multi-instumentalist, producer, and artist.  Despite all of this, he is still best-known for being the guitarist and occasional songwriter and vocalist for Blur.  However, if you spotted this post looking for some of the shiny-sounding “Britpop” that Blur brought to prominence in the 1990s, there’s none of that to be found here.  With influences that range from 1960s giants like The Beatles and The Who to lesser-known American indie groups such as Pavement and Mission of Burma, Graham’s managed to create an impressive body of work that showcases his signature highly-praised guitar work and also (sometimes alarmingly personal) lyrical themes of love, struggle, neuroticism, and the occasional social commentary, all of which are delivered with a sense of humor and earnestness which seems to be lacking on many records today.  With a new album slated for release later this year, and a slew of European festival dates this summer, this is the perfect time for you to accept Coxon into your life!  Or at least, y’know, onto your ipod.
